Questions

Bio-insecticides: short answers

Which bio-insecticides are registered in India?

The CIB&RC list of major uses (as on 30 September 2026) gives 73 bio-insecticide products for crops: neem (azadirachtin), Bacillus thuringiensis, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Lecanicillium (Verticillium) lecanii, Isaria fumosorosea, nuclear polyhedrosis viruses, nematode biocontrol agents (Pseudomonas fluorescens, Trichoderma, Verticillium chlamydosporium, Paecilomyces lilacinus, Bacillus firmus) and a pheromone, across 29 crops; and 14 products for mosquito control.

Which bio-insecticides can be used on cotton?

For cotton the list gives Bacillus thuringiensis, Beauveria bassiana, Lecanicillium (Verticillium) lecanii, Neem (azadirachtin), Nuclear polyhedrosis virus, Pheromone, against bollworms, whitefly, aphids, jassids and Spodoptera. Doses are in the cotton table above.

Which bio-insecticides control Helicoverpa (pod borer and fruit borer)?

Bacillus thuringiensis, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Neem (azadirachtin), Nuclear polyhedrosis virus, registered against Helicoverpa or Heliothis on chickpea, cotton, pigeon pea, soybean, tobacco, tomato.

What is the waiting period for neem-based insecticides?

For the azadirachtin (neem) products in the list, the waiting period before harvest is 1, 3, 5 or 7 days, depending on the product and crop.

Which biologicals are registered against root-knot nematodes?

Pseudomonas fluorescens, Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Verticillium chlamydosporium and Paecilomyces lilacinus, as seed treatment, nursery-bed treatment and soil application with enriched farmyard manure, on acid lime, banana, brinjal, carnations, carrot, chilli, cucumber, gerbera, okra, papaya, tomato, tuberose.

Is the CIB&RC major uses list legally binding?

No. The list itself says it is compiled from available information for guidance, not for legal purposes. What binds is each productโ€™s certificate of registration with its approved label and leaflet; use a product only on the crops and pests on its label.
