Questions
Plant growth regulators: short answers
Which plant growth regulators are registered in India?
The CIB&RC list of major uses (up to 30 September 2026) gives 38 plant growth regulator products: gibberellic acid, paclobutrazol, ethephon, mepiquat chloride and chlormequat chloride, triacontanol, NAA, forchlorfenuron, hydrogen cyanamide, chlorpropham, 1-methylcyclopropene and a few others, with uses on 30 crops.
Which growth regulators are registered for mango?
For mango the list gives ethephon, NAA, paclobutrazol: paclobutrazol as a soil application after harvest to bring regular flowering, ethephon for flowering and ripening, and NAA against fruit drop and malformation. Doses by tree age are in the mango table above.
Is paclobutrazol approved in India, and how is it applied on mango?
Yes. The list has 5 paclobutrazol products. On mango it is applied once after harvest (July to October), diluted in 5 to 10 litres of water in a furrow 5 to 10 cm deep about 30 cm from the trunk, at a dose that rises with the age of the tree; on sandy soil the list says the rate may be cut to 75%.
Which products are registered for ripening fruit?
Ethephon (39% SL, 20% WP and 15% WP) is registered for post-harvest ripening of mango, banana and tomato, and for uniform ripening of coffee berries. 1-methylcyclopropene does the opposite: it slows ripening of stored apples.
Which growth regulators control excess vegetative growth in cotton?
Mepiquat chloride, chlormequat chloride, cyclanilide + mepiquat chloride and paclobutrazol are registered for cotton; NAA is registered against shedding of squares and bolls. Doses are in the cotton table above.
Is the CIB&RC major uses list legally binding?
No. The list itself says it is compiled from available information for guidance, not for legal purposes. What binds is each product’s certificate of registration with its approved label and leaflet; use a product only on the crops and for the purposes on its label.

The list says: “The document has been compiled on the basis of available information for guidance and not for legal purposes.” Product names and values as listed; where a figure does not add up, it is flagged against the row.
